Presented at a Colloquium, Bombay, February 26 March 2, 1962. A portable apparatus is described, consisting of a Ra Be fast neutron source and a BF/sub 3/ thermal-neutron detector plus associated electronic counting and integrating circuitry, whose purpose is the measurement of the water content of soils. Theoretical aspects of the neutron collisions with the H atoms in water are outlined, in order to explain the thermalization and capture of the neutrons. The effects of the detection geometry are studied. Methods for caIibrating the apparatus and for determining its precision are reviewed. (T.F.H.)
