The Present State of Research on the Vitrification of Concentrated Solutions of Fission Products; ETAT DES ETUDES SUR LA VITRIFICATION DES SOLUTIONS CONCENTREES DE PRODUITS DE FISSION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4806927
Various glass composptions were studied by an active cell which forms glasses in crucibles. The leaching rate from the glass increases from one to two x 10/sup -7/ g of glass/cm/sup 2//day. Activity loss by volatiliiy during vitrification is usually below 0.1% of total activity. Off-gas cleaning is made easier by a filter of granules including iron. After saturation the filter content is melted. The calcination and vitrification plant discussed can treat 72 liters of solution containing tracer activity every day. A modification was made to reduce the loss of ruthenium106. A pot vitrification plant is also being studied in order to reduce processing cost by pouring the glass after melting. A plant is also being studied for producing very active glass. (auth)
