The effect of surface preparation on the initiation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking in weld heat-affected zones of austenitic stainless steel pipes in boiling water reactors is reviewed. A model was developed to determine the effects of machining and grinding operations on the internal surface of the pipe. This model includes the effects of cold work, surface damage, localized effects and martensite formation. The role of each factor is reviewed and it is shown that each is a contributor to the initiation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking in the welded pipes.
