AN INVESTIGATION ON HIGH FREQUENCY ION SOURCE EFFICIENCY

The effects of pressure, extraction voltage. oscillator power output, magnetic lens construction, and the dimensions of extraction canal. etc., upon the efficiency of a high-frequency ion source of the Thonemann type were investigated, and relations between ion current and these factors were drawn. Ion currents of 2 ma were obtained at an oscillator power of 100 w, 1OO Mc and 10.20 mu Hg pressure. The gas consumption was 10.20 cm/sup 3//hr and the extraction voltage was 5to 6 kv. A circuit design was used which ensured a good adaptation of the oscillator to the source, and the efficiency under the oscillation conditions was increased. Simplicity of the construction and an easy montage, low gas consumption, large ion current, stability and long life of the source, and low high-frequency power consumption were accomplished. These may facilitate utilization of the h-f source in high-tension sets. (auth)
