The possibility of employing nuclear emulsions as a detector for gamma radiation from celestial sources was tested in a balloon flight over Texas. An average downward flux of 0.27 photons/cm/sup 2/ sec steradian was found during ascent and descent of the balloon in a solid angle of 0.842 steradian. An upper limit to the flux of gamma rays at an altitude of between 3 and 4.5 gm/cm/sup 2/ was determined as 1.7 x 10/sup -2/ photons/cm/sup 2/ sec steradian. An upper limit to the albedo flux during ascent and descent is given by 2.5 x 10/sup -2/ photons/cm/sup 2/ sec steradian. The results on scanning time and scanning efficiency in Ilford G-5 emulsions were not too encouraging. (auth)
