INVENTION REPORT: A DUAL SCANNING SYSTEM FOR REACTOR FUEL FAILURE DETECTION
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:4806008
A system for monitoring a large number of continuously flowing effluent coolant samples from a nuclear reactor for small traces of fission product gamma activity resulting from a fuel element failure is described. Scanning functions are performed by rotating scintillation type detectors past a circular array of about 100 shielded sample chambers, each fed from an individual reactor process channel. The system has a fast-scan gross-gamma monitor to detect rapid burst- type failures and a slow-scan higher-sensitivity gamma monitor to confirm threshold signals from the gross monitor. (M.C.G.)
