A process is giy-en for dissolving uranium-zirconium alloys. The process comprises immersing said alloys in a molten zirconium tetrafluoride- sodium fluoride mixture, sparging the molten mixture with a fluorinating agent, such as bromine pentafluoride, bromine trifluoride, chlorine trifluoride. or fluorine, whereby zirconium fluoride and uranium hexafluoride are formed and the latter is volatil ized while the zirconium fluoride formed remains in the zirconium fluoride-- sodium fluoride melt.
