Anomalous Uranium-Lead Ages

Journal Article · · Geological Society of America, Bulletin
The ages from the isotopic ratios Pb206U238, Pb207U2 and Pb207/Pb206 do not agree with each other for a large fraction of the minerals studied. Many of these anomalous ages cannot be explained by radon leakage or errors in lead isotopic composition, and one possible cause may be removal of Pb from U minerals during recrystallization. Analysis of age data for several specimens of pitchblende and Pb minerals from the Lake Athabasca U district indicates that the true age is 1900 plus or minus 40 million years and that there must have been more than one period of Pb removal. it is concluded that detailed study of the U and Pb isotopic content of a district can be used to evaluate the times of deposition and Pb removal.
