Powders suitable for extinguishing fires of burning uranium, plutonium, or thorium metal comprise mixtures of inorganic chloride and/or fluoride salts which are inert toward such burning metals and which have melting points below 640 deg C. The salts usually are of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. ln use, the powder is dumped over the burning metal to form a cone; the frit so formed excludes the air, and heat is absorbed by the fusing of the powder.
