By dividing the plasma radially into an inner attenuating region of high average electron density and an outer region of lower average electron density, an approximate solution is obtained for the E/sub 01/ mode in a plasma-filled cylindrical waveguide. The dependence of cut-off frequency on the plasma frequency ( omega /po) at the guide center and on the guide radius (b) is determined, and an estimate made of the maximum value of omega po b allowed before distortion of the normal waveguide mode occurs. When omega po b > 11 x lO/sup 10/ cm/sec, the E/sub 01/ mode maximum no longer appears at the center of the guide but at a radius that decreases with frequency. (auth)
