IRIDIUM IN STONE METEORITES BY NEUTRON ACTIVATION ANALYSIS

Journal Article · · Geochim. et Cosmochim. Acta
Chemical and radiometric procedures for the determination of submicrogram amounts of iridium in silicate materials by use of neutron activation were developed. These procedures were applied to the analyses of six chondrite meteorites, one achondrite meteorite, and standard rock G-1. A cosmic abundance value for iridium based on the chondrite analyses of this work was calculated to be 0.38 (Si = 10/sup 6/). This value is lower than the interpolated iridium abundances of both Suess and Urey and Cameron, but is closer to that of Cameron. Implications of these results are discussed. (auth)
