DEVICE FOR THE REMOVAL OF A NUMBER OF BALLS IN PARTICULAR FROM NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4804343
In a nuclear reactor having ball-shaped fuel elements filled into the reactor container, it is necessary, at a given moment, to remove a predetermined number of the balls from the reactor space. It has been shown that the opening for discharging the balls must have a dimension at least from five to ten times the diameter of the balls, in order to avoid jamming of the balls. A device is described for the removal of a number of balls from a container, comprising a disk obturating a lower opening of the container, the disk having an opening with a width a little greater than the diameter of the balls. The removal of the balls is effected by rotation or axial displacement of the disk. Preferably, the opening has the form of a radial slot having a length at least three times the diameter of the balls. The disk may also have a thickness a little greater than the diameter of the balls and may cover with half its surface the bottom of a discharge cylinder of the container passing through the walls of the latter. After receiving balls into the slot, the disk is turned so as to bring the balls outside the discharge cylinder. (NPO)
