NEUTRON SHIELDING FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS
In a nuclear reactor having reactor channels in which the fuel elements are located and cooled by a circulating fluid, the front face of the reactor core is covered with a neutron shield placed inside the space bounded by this front face and the pressure vessel wall enclosing the reactor core. This neutron shield has passages in alignment with the reactor channels and each encloses neutron shielding means comprising a plurality of surfaces so arranged as to disperse the neutrons to enable their absorption in the said shield, while allowing the cooling fiuid to circulate the said passages without undergoing substantial pressure drop across said neutron shield. Preferably, each of these shielding means comprises a central longitudinal member provided with at least one spiral rib whose edge reaches to the wall of the passage in which these means are placed.
