THE EFFECTS OF $gamma$-IRRADIATION ON POLY-METHYL METHACRYLATE
Radiation effects on the decrease in the molecular weight of stressed and unstressed polymethyl methacrylate was the same for both. The mechanical properties of PMMA depreciated rapidly when the irradiation dosage exceeded 3 x 10/sup 6/ r and the degree of polymerization fell below 1500. The glass transition temperature, T, of irradiated PMMA decreased with increasing dosage. The relationship between T/sub g/ and the molecular weight, M/sub v/ can be expressed as 1/T/sub g/ = 2.85 x 10/sup -3/ + 0.333 x 10/sup 1/ x 1/M/sub v/ (1/ K). The G-value for the main chain fracture of samples irradiated in a vacuum and in air was about 2.1. PMMA irradiated with a dosage of 10/sup 7/-- 10/sup 8/ r became swollen with bubbles when heated even after 2 yr and 2 mo of storage at room temperature. The swelling seemed to be attributed to the generation of gas, not only during irradiation but also during heating. (OID)
