PARR BOMB COMBUSTION OF TISSUES FOR CARBON-14 AND TRITIUM ANALYSIS

Journal Article · · Atomlight (U.S.) Ceased publication

The Parr metal oxygen bomb was used for the combustion of biological samples for the determination of low levels of C/sup 14/ and tritium. A system is outlined that was used for hundreds of combustions with excellent results. When tissues containing no radioactivity were combusted after one containing relatively high levels of tritium no contamination was evident When samples containing only carbon-14 were combusted no radioactivity could be detected in the ethanol washes of the bomb and water trap showing that this system is satisfactory for the combustion of samples containing both carbon-14 and tritium. With the methods outlined it was possible to detect as little as 4.0 x 10/sup -4/ microcuries of tritium and 1.0 x 10/sup -4/ microcuries of carbon-14 per 3 grams of fresh tissue. (C.H.)
