ANNUAL REPORT ON STUDIES OF EXCHANGE BETWEEN MOLTEN SALTS AND SOLIDS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4803342
The exehange of sodium ions from molten sodium chloride for potassium ions in solid potassium hexatitanate was investigated. The exchange is rapid and reversible, and serves as a means of obtaining sodium hexatitanate, Na/sub 2/Ti/ sub 6/O/sub 13/, in the same fibrous form as the original potassium compound. An equilibrium constant of approximately unity was found for the exchange reaction. Density and xray diffractometer measurements made in order to characterize the artificially prepared sodalite (Na/sub 8/Al/sub 6/ Si/sub 6/O/sub 24/ Cl/sub 2/) used in previous exchange studies revealed the presence of a vitreous component. Improved methods for preparing crystalline sodalite were developed. A zinc borate (4ZnO - 3B/sub 2/O/sub 3/) whose structure is analogous to that of sodalite was prepared, and its use in exchange studies is proposed. (auth)
