HIGH-ENERGY GAMMA-RAY TELESCOPE

Journal Article · · Nucleonics (U.S.) Ceased publication
OSTI ID:4803338
A high-energy gamma telescope on Explorer XI detected 22 gamma rays with energles >50 Mev at a rate of 2.4 per hour. This rate is of the same magnitude as that expected from collisions of high-energy cosmic primaries with interstellar gas, indicating that the steady-state theory of the universe is wrong. The telescope comprises a sandwich crystal scintillator covered by a plastic anticoincidence scintillator, a photomultiplier, and a Cherenkov detector. (D.L.C.)
