ENERGY LEVELS OF C$sup 12$ FROM Be$sup 9$ ($alpha$,n$gamma$)C$sup 12$ REACTION

Energy levels of C/sup 12/ were studied by examining gamma radiation from the reaction Be/sup 9/( alpha ,n gamma )C/sup 12/, using a scintillation pair spectrometer with differential discriminators in the side channels. Gamma rays of 3.14 plus or minus 0.05 Mev with intensity approximates 2%, relative to the 4.43 Mev gamma rays from the same reaction, were detected. This establishes the energy of the level in C/sup 12/ as 7.5 plus or minus 0.1 Mev. The region in the neighborhood of 7.5 Mev was also examined but no evidence was found for a radiation of this energy which, together with other evidence suggests that the spin of this level is J = 0 from which the ground state transition (J = 0 for the ground state) is forbidden.
