Tertiary amyl anmd higher tertiary alcohols were synthetized at 6 to 60 deg C by irradiating gamma-rays on a mixture of propanol-2 and ethylene in glass vessels. It was found that as the irradiation temperature the G value of these telomers increases markedly, e.g. up to ca. 300 at 60 deg C. It was concluded from the distribution of the telomers produced that this reaction proceeds hy a chain mechanism, with the isopropyl radical (CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/COH as the chain- carrying radical. It was estimated that the characteristic effects of gamma rays will be found in the step prior to the production of the isopropyl radical. (auth)
