EXCITATION FUNCTIONS OF K$sup 41$ + p REACTIONS

The energy of some of the gamma radiation following the proton bombardment of K/sup 41/ was measured, and the origins of some of these gamma rays were determined. The excitation functions of the 1.00-Mev gamma from inelastic scattering in K/sup 41/ and the 2.16-Mev gamma from the K/sup 41/(p, alpha gamma reaction were measured in a region between 2.3 and 3.5 Mev and approximately 50 resonances observed. The energies and absolute cross sections, and the anisotropy of the gamma radiation proceeding from some of these resonances were measured, leading to information on the excited states in Ca/sup 42/ at about 13-Mev excitation, including an upper limit on the average level spacing. Evidence is given to show the 100-Mev level in K/sup 41/ is most likely a 1/2+ state in agreement with theoretical predictions. (auth)
