It was found that cyclic monomers such as trioxane, diketene, BETA - propiolactone, and 3,3-bischloromethylcycloxabutane are polymerized oniy in the solid state by irradiation with gamma rays. The velocity of polymerization is proportional to the intensity and is at a maximum just below the fusion point of the monomer. A saturation for the polymer yield was observed. The polymerization proceeds by an ionic mechanism. It is assumed that the saturation is due to the disorder caused in the crystalline lattice by the presence of the polymer and a kinetic scheme is proposed. It takes into consideration the experimental results. (tr-auth)
