PARTICLE MOTION NEAR A NUCLEAR DETONATION IN HALITE. PROJECT GNOME

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4802799
BS>Strong motion parameters from the Project Gnome operation were successfully measured in the region extending from 60 to 480 meters along both vertical and horizontal radii. Postshot eavity pressure and temperature were not obtained because of cable failure. Times of arrival taken from acceleration channels gave a velocity in the salt of 4.82 km/sec. Vertically, the velocities varied from 4.8 km/sec to 0.85 km/sec at the surface owing to varying lithology. Peak accelerations in the salt attenuated as R-/sup -5.3/ from 60 to 122 meters and as R/sup -2.7/ from 122 to 480 meters. Peak velocities attenuated as R/sup - 3.56/ out to 100 meters and as R/sup -1.36/ from 100 to 480 meters. Information on peak values of displacement was not obtained closer than 229 meters because of early cable failure. Stress and strain data are similarly limited. Peak values of acceleration, velocity, and displacement at surface zero were 25 g, 5.6 m/sec, and 168 cm, respectively. At a horizontal distance of 298 meters, free-field data were 26 g, 3 m/sec, and a peak displacement of 7.6 cm. Residual displacement at this station was 79 cm. (auth)
