METHOD OF FORMING A PROTECTIVE COATING ON STEEL SURFACES

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4802715
A method is given for coating steel surfaces to inhibit the corrosive attack of liquid metal, e.g., liquid Bi and its alloys with Pb and/or Sn. The method comprises heating a steel containing C, N, and Al, Ti, or Zr to form a stable nitride by reaction of at least 50% of the N content with the Al, Ti, or Zr, and contacting the steel surface with a liquid metal containing >2 ppm Al, Ti, or Zr at 550 to 1100 deg C to form a layer of Al, Ti, or Zr carbide on the surface. The surface may also be protected against erosion by employing a liquid metal containing >2 ppm Zr. (D.L.C.)
