URANIUM-BEARING BODIES IN THE ORE DEPOSITS OF TRAVERSELLA (ITALY)

Journal Article · · Economic Geology and the Bulletin of the Society of Economic Geologists (U.S.)
Analyses were made of radioactive ore deposits from the Traversella mine, which is in the northwestern Piedmont and more precisely in the Turin province. The radioactive mineral was found to be uraninite, thorlferous type. lt occurs in isometric euhedral crystals, in polyhedric forms, both alone and in combination. The average specific gravity of the uraninites of Traversella is near 9. In transmitted light it appears opaque, even in very thin sections, but in polished sections it has a gray color, tending to brownish. The reflecting power is between 14 and 16%. The deposit is classlfied as contact metasomatic in a perimagmatic area. A quantitative analysis was made of the uraninite, and the data are given. (P.C.H.)
