THE $gamma$-RADIATION OF CESIUM-139 (in Russian)
With the exception of a paper by D. Perkins and R. King (Nucl. Sci. Eng., 7: 3(1958)) there are no data available on the energy level of the gamma radiation of Cs/sup 139/ although such data are needed for evaluating the background in control systems and for determining the leak tightness of the fuel element cans; they are of interest also for studying the gamma spectrum of short- lived fission products. In order to carry out the measurements, the Cs/sup 139/ must be separated from the accompanying fission products. Kr and Xe were separated by means of filters; they yielded Cs and Rb isotopes as decay products. By suitable choice of the time parameters the Cs/sup 139/ concentration on the filter paper could be substantially increased. A scintillation spectrometer with Nal(Tl) and CsI(Tl) crystal detectors, a photomultiplier and a 100-channel pulse height analyzer were used for the study of the spectrum. The highest intensities were found at the following levels: 0.63 plus or minus 0.03; 1.28 plus or minus 0.03; 1.9 plus or minus 0.08; and 3.40 plus or minus 0.08 Mev. The highest energy line was at 4.28 Mev. The following low-intensity lines were noted: 0.50 plus or minus strong radiation of Ba/sup 139/ and Cs/sup 138/ interfered with measurements below 0.4 Mev.
