Charging large capacitor banks in thermonuclear research

Journal Article · · Electrical Engineering

Most fusion experiments involve the rapid transfer of energy from large capacitor banks to a system of coils which produce strong magnetic fields to heat and contain deuterium plasma; therefore, it is necessary to have great quantities of stored energy available. The most feasible means of achieving this goal is to charge large capacitor banks to some predetermined voltage and energy level, and then to discharge them rapidly into the gas by triggered switching devices such as ignitrons or spark gaps. A description is given here of various charging systems.
