Calculations were carried out on a digital computer for incident 9-Bev protons on an average light nuclei (N/sup 14/) and on an average heavy nuclei (Nb/ sup 94/). After interaction the particles were separated into three energy groups: sparticles or shower particles (0.5 to 9 Bev for nucleons, and 0.08 to ~8 Bev for pi -mesons), g-particles or cascade particles (0.03 to 0.5 Bev for nucleons, and 0.08 to 0.15 Bev for pi -mesons), and b-particles or particles with black prongs (<0.03 Bev for nucleons and <0.15 Bev for pi mesons). The overall energy interval for the N-N interactions was subdivided into 5 energy intervals, and for the pi -N interactions in 4 energy subgroups. It was assumed that the energy and angular characteristics for the elastic and inelastic interactions were constant within each subgroup. The calculated results were compared with experimental results from photoemulsion experiments, and the results were in good agreement with an intracascade mechanism for the interaction. At high excitation energies, two reactions take place: p + N yields d + k pi , and p + N yields p + n + k pi . In reacting 25-Bev protons with platinum, an excitation energy of about 8 Mev was assumed in order to obtain agreement with the observed experimental ratio (d/p)/sub pt/ = 0.024. The results for Al are analogous. Calculated ratios for the number of deuterons, protons, and pi - mesons were (d/p)/sub Pt/ = 0.03, (d/p)/sub Al/ = 0.02, (d/ pi /sup +/) /sub Pt/= 0.08, and (d/ pi /sup +/)/sub Al/ = 0.05. These results were in good agreement with the experimental values. A high relative yield of deuterons was noted. (TTT)
