THE POSSIBILITY OF PREPARING LAMINAR ALLOYS OF IRON-ALUMINUM BY DIFFUSION OF THE ALUMINUM INTO FERROUS ALLOYS (in French)

A study was made on the preparation of laminar Fe-Al alloys be diffusion of aluminum into steel. Steel samples with and without the addition of Ti, Nb, and Zr, in the form of platelets, were covered with a thin layer of Zn and clad with Al by immersion in a fused melt at 675 deg C. The results showed that Ti and Nb favor a regular diffusion of the Al and prevent localized dissolution and the distortions caused by diffusion irregularities. The steels containing Nb and Ti after 2 hr at 1100 deg C show no concentration gradient, and the alloys appear perfectly homogeneous. The alloys obtained in this manner have higher plasticity properties than those prepared by fusion. The mechanical properties of a diffusion alloy containing 24% Al are tabulated. (J.S.R.)
