A study was made of the connection between oxidation and I/sup 131/ release in irradiated U at 800 deg C, under conditions where only gaseous I/sup 131/ is released. The experiments were continued for several hours after oxidation was complete. In air, U oxidizes to U/sub 3/O/sub 6/ and a maximum of 50% of the I/sup 131/ is released, both processes coming to completion after 1.5 hr. In CO/sub 2/, U oxidizes to U/sub 2.27/ in 1 hr, while no I/sup 131/ is released in this period. As heating continues, the U oxide loses O/sub 2/ and begins to release I/sup 131/, and after several hours is UO/sub 2.0/; after 6 hr, 70% of the I/sup 131/ has been released. (D.L.C.)
