EFFECT OF OXYGEN ON HYDROGEN PICKUP OF ZIRCALOYS DURING AUTOCLAVING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4800178

A study was conducted to determine whether H partial pressure existing in the static autoclaves or the higher O concentration in the refreshed autoclaves is the variable controlling factor in H pickup by Zircaloy. Resulting data indicate that Zircaloy H pickup can be reduced by operating in a refreshed autoclave system using O containing water. It appears possible to reduce H pickup in reactor systems by maintaining an O partial pressure in the coolant. (J.R.D.)
