Basic studies carried out on the mechanism of mass transfer between two liquid phases, particularly recent models that postulate continual renewal of interface, are reviewed. The efficiency of extraction equipment and the significance of drop coalescence are discussed. It is stated that the overall stage efficiency of liquid extraction processes can be increased by better control of the solubility of the extractable solute, accomplished by addition of prosolvents and anti-solvents.
