For presentation at Colloquium on the Use of Radioisotopes and Research on Plant Nutrition by the Soil, Feb. 26--Mar. 2, 1962, Bombay. A fast neutron source (e.g., the Ra-Be type) is lowered into the ground, and the ground-level thermal neutron intensity is measured using a BF/sub 3/ counter. The neutrons may be thermalized by collisions with H atoms (mostly in water), or they may be captured by Cl atoms in NaCl. The calibration of the neutron sonde, the effects of the physical parameters of the BF/sub 3/ counter on the linearity of the response, and the effects of the apparent density and NaCl content of the soil are studied.
