QUARTERLY STATUS REPORT OF THE LASL CONTROLLED THERMONUCLEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM FOR PERIOD ENDING MAY 20, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4799933
Results of injecting deuterium in Picket Fence II B indicate that the second injection gun abruptly spills out any previously trapped plasma. In Picket Fence III the duration of neutron signals produced by the trapped fast ions was found to increase with the magnetic field up to the maximum field strength of 2300 G at the ring cusp. Experiments with coaxial guns are described along with work underway to construct a useful kinetic theory of plasmas which includes electromagnetic radiation. A preionization arrangement for SCYLLA, using a rapidly oscillating B/sub z/ field, which should result in plasma with lower impurities was installed. An apparatus is being tested for analysis of injected plasma in SCYLLA III. In other work, SCYLLA I spectroscopy was continued and beam splitting as an injection method was studied for transverse magnetic fields. Experiments with plasma shorting plates were conducted in which it was found that there is a possibility of using a shorting technique for transverse injection. (J.R.D.)
