Study of Isotopic Exchange Reactors; ETUDE DES REACTEURS D'ECHANGE ISOTOPIQUE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4799860
A study is made of the general case of the theory of first-order isotopic chemical exchange between gaseous and liquid phases in a reaction vessel, starting from fundamental reaction kinetic data and making no limiting hypotheses concerning the value of the separation factor. Both counter-current and co-current reaction vessels are considered. The concepts of the quotient, over-all efficiency, and ratio of such reaction vessels are developed for the case of H/sub 2/ and D/sub 2/ separation. The search for an additive value for reactors in series leads to the defini-tion of an exchange capacity and a total efficiency (or number of theoretical reactors). The relationships between these various quantities are established. The reactor performance is linked to the first-order reaction kinetics by the transfer number. The relationships are given for a number of cases. Applications of the calculations are given, together with the approximations necessary when, because of the presence of several components in each phase, the exchange reaction does not obey a single kinetic law.
