The hard showers observed with a large multiplate cloud chamber at 50 and 250 mwe underground were analyzed These showers were classified according to the nature of their parents. The relative frequency of pi - and mu -induced showers, r, was r/sub 50/ = 0. 46 plus or minus 0.22 and r/sub 250/= 0.69 plus or minus 0.29. These results agree with theoretical calculation. The energy of each mu -induced shower is obtained assuming (1) a model of collisions at a c.m.s. of the virtual photons and the nucleons, (2) one fire-ball model, and (3) the model of constant transverse momentum of secondary particles. Energy distributions obtained are compared with those of the Williams-Weizsacker method. The value of photo-nuclear cross section is constant to several tens of Bev of shower energy. The angular distribution of the secondary pi -meson is isotropic in the model of (1) or (2). (auth)
