CALCULATION OF NEUTRON AGE AND MOMENTS OF THE NEUTRON SLOWING DOWN DENSITY DISTRIBUTION IN HYDROCARBONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4799295
An evaluation relating to the substitution of a cold moderator in the high temperature POPR critical experi-ments was undertaken. One aspect of this evaluation was an attempt to match'' neutron ages for the hot and cold moderator. Calculations showed that a mixture of furfural and om-terphenyl-25% diphenyl does not satisfy the age matching requirement. The results of the calculation gave for the slowing down age of the hot and cold moderators respectively: 64.0 plus or minus 0.5 cm/sup 2/ and 52.4 plus or minus 0.4 cm/ sup 2/. Tables and curves of the moments of the neutron slowing down distribution as a function of C/H ratio are presented. All data were normalized to a mass density of 1.0 gm/cc. There appeared to be very good agreement between data read from the curves and previously calculated results. (auth)
