The construction of two plasma accelerator systems is reported. A 1000- joule, 60-ev, low-inductance capacitor with a 15 in.-long copper gun is used in one design. Provisions are made in this system for gas injection, plasma injection from a ring of bottom guns, or both. Another system is described which has a maximum capacitor bank energy of 2400 joules. The gas is injected by a mechanically pulsed valve. Research and development is also reported on the axial acceleration of plasma by axial magnetic fields. (J.R.D.)
