The general concept of the Vulcain Reactor is based on the principle of variable moderation. Variable moderation can be achieved through two mutually independent factors: a temperature change of the moderator which has a temperature different from that of the coolant and a periodic change in the composition of the moderator. The special concept of the Vulcain Reactor rests on the use of a mixture of light and heavy water under high pressure for both the moderator and the coolant. The coolant passes through the upper part of the reactor core in the pressure vessel and then gives up its heat in a steam generator. The moderator also flows through the core in a closed circuit, its temperature being adjusted in a special heat exchanger according to the desired reactor output. The fuel elements consist of slightly enriched uranium oxide in the form of tablets clad with Zircaloy or stainless steel. This reactor is being studied for utilization in ship propulsion. (auth)
