Title: KINEMATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF RADIAL ARM INDEXING MECHANISM. TOP TRANSFER MACHINE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4797997

Results of analysis of the top transfer machine used in fuel handling are presented. Results indicate that the mechanism will satisfactorily adjust the radial position of the head within the limits set by the self-centering head. By jogging the electrical control buttons and holding the duration of contact down to 1/10 sec, the machine will be positioned within 0.028 in. The horizontal speed of the pickup head, if the motor is maintained at synchronous speed, is 5.6 fps at the center position and 0.0105 fps at a position 59 in. from the center. However, the motor will not be maintained at synchronous speed near the center; and by proper choice of the inertia of the motor and gears and the applied torque to the mechanism, the maximum velocity at the center can be kept below 0.5 fps. This may entail a small flywheel on the motor. There will be no tendency of the cam and linkage to jam within reasonable values of rolling friction. A coefficient of rolling friction of 0.155 can be encountered before the machine stalls. This is unlikely as the coefficient of rolling friction is seldom as high as 0.020. Changing the slope of the cam at the starting position reduces the tendency of the mechanism to lock A mathematical analysis of the dynamics of the radial arm indexing mechanism indicates that satisfactory performance can be obtained with a single speed, polyphase induction motor used both for drive and brake. However, the motor torque will vary under different operating conditions; this will be compensated by changing the voltage supplied to the motor. lt may be necessary to add a small flywheel to the motor shaft in order to limit the initial acceleration to a safe value. The only control devices used by the operator are forward and reverse, normally open switches. (auth)
