ON THE TOXICITY OF BERYLLIUM OXIDE

Journal Article · · Gigiena i Sanit.
OSTI ID:4797073
Introduction of beryllium oxide in the form of a finely dispersed aerosol into the respiratory tract of experimental animals (rats), at a concentration of 0.02 and 0.002 mg/l of air, produced a toxic effect. The clinical picture of poisoning in animals was characterized by a period of agitution, lasting 15 to 20 minutes, then followed by that of depression. As the intoxication progressed a permanent dyspnoea developed (140 to 150 respiratory movements per minute at rest). As the results of repeated action of beryllium oxide, round cell infiltrations and subsequent diffused sclerosis were found to develop in rats' lungs. Some animals revealed neoplasms of internal organs and skeletoa at all the stages of observation. These lesions may also be connected with intoxication. (Public Health Eng.
