The radiosensitivity of the male sexual cells of the loach was chosen for closer study as it was previously investigated by A. A. Neifakh (Doklady Akad. Nauk SSSR, 111: 585 (1956)). The spermatozoa were irradiated with doses rang ing from 100 r to 1000 kr, using the viability of the embryos resulting from the impregnation of normal roes with irradiated sperms as the indicator. The mature sperm cells were obtained within 36 to 40 hours after injection with a chorionic hormone. Results showed that the spermatozoa returned their ability to impregnate throughout the investigated range: up to 200 kr there was not noticeable reduction of this capacity and even at 1000 kr up to 1% of the sperms were viable. The nucleus was the most radiosensitive part of the system; even the lowest dose used created a perceptible increase of chromosome breaks, reducing somewhat the viability. Doses between 2 to 5 kr appeared to be the most dangerous; although added exposure led ultimately to the complete deactivation of the cells, the hazard to the offspring was decreased. A parallelism was noted between the percentage of mitoses with bridged anaphase and telephase and the percentage of the destroyed offspring. (TTT)
