An investigation was made of barytes, magnetite, and limonite concretes containing different locally available aggregates of high density for biological shielding. It was found that barytes concretes with the highest density, containing steel shot, show the greatest shielding effect. Results obtained constitute a basis on which heavy concretes for biological shieldings can be designed. With locally available materials, 3.2 tons per m/sup 3/ can be achieved without ferrous admixtures in barytes concretes. A similar value is attainable with limonite aggregate if the concrete contains up to 250 liters of water of hydration. All of the concretes studied may be used either as mass concretes or for structural purposes at radiation temperatures not exceeding 150 deg C. (P.C.H.)
