A method and apparatus are described for confining a gaseous plasma by means of electric rather than magnetic fields. In this apparatus, a gas is ionized and heated in a reaction space, and a traveling wave is applied to a slow wave structure surrounding the reaction space. Plasma confinement occurs when the traveling wave is propegated at a speed high compared with the speed of plasma particles. (D.L.C.)
