THE RADIOLYSIS OF DIBROMODICHLOROMETHANE AND THE Co-60 GAMMA-RAY INDUCED EXCHANGE BETWEEN CCl$sub 2$Br$sub 2$ AND Br$sub 2$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4795941
The radiolysis of air-free CCl/sub 2/Br/sub 2/ by gamma rays was investigated at temperatures from --196 to 131 deg C. An investigation of the radioinduced exchange between CCl/sub 2/Br/sub 2/ and Br/sub 2/ was also performed at 25 to 88 deg C with initial bromine concentrations in the range 0.016 to 0.021 M and at dose rates in the range 7 x 10/sup 15/ to 7 x 10/sup 17/ ev/liter min. Br/sub 2/ is the major free-halogen product at all temperatures; the proportion of Cl atoms among the free-halogen products is less than 5% at all temperatures in the liquid and solid phases. CCl/sub 4/, CCl/sub 3/Br, C/sub 2/ Cl/sub 4/, and C/sub 2/Cl/sub 4 /Br/sub 2/ were identified as radiolysis products. Four additional organic products were tentatively identified as CClBr/sub 3/, CBr/ sub 4/, C/sub 2/Cl/sub 5/Br, and C/sub 2/Cl/sub 3/Br/sub 3/. (P.C.H.)
