COMPENSATED ION CHAMBER FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

For compensating the effect of gamma radiation on the indication of neutron-sensitive ion chambers, it has been proposed to connect the output of two adjacent ion chambers in opposition, one of them being sensitive to gamma radiation alone, the other to both gamma radiation and neutron flux. With this arrangement, the degree of compensation remains constant only in a perfectly uniform radiation field. In order to decrease the influence of the gradient of the radiation field, the compensating adjustment must be made very exactly. To this end, the compensated ion chamber comprises three elements, each having the shape of a truncated cone and being placed cosxially one inside the other, so that the volumes bounded by either pair of adjoining elements are equal. These two volumes constitute the volumes of the said ion chambers connected in opposition, the said compensating adjustment being performed by axial displacement of one of said elements with respect to the others. Preferably the outermost and the innermost of the elements are each extended at their extremities by cylindrical portions. (NPO)
