IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO SAFETY EQUIPMENTS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4795868
The safety system of a nuclear reactor is generally provided with an a-c source for de-energizing the relays controlling the reactor shut-down. Since faults developing in the supply system do not justify shutting-down the reactor, a duplicate a-c source may be provided as a stand-by which is automatically substituted for the other source in the event, say, of the voltage or frequency departing from a nominal value by more than a predetermined amount. The change- over from one source to the other, however, necessarily occupies a period of time which usually will be longer than the permissible release time of the control relays, so that a change-over will cause a reactor shutdown. In order to prevent this, the safety system comprises a shut-down relay having a winding arranged to be normally energized from a first source of supply and a deenergization to initiate the reactor shut-down. Contacts of the control relays are connected in series with the coils of said shut-down relay, while the coils of them are arranged to be energized from one of two interchangeable further sources. During the period of time of change-over from one to the other of these sources, the said contacts of the control relays are shunted, preventing in this manner the de- energization of the shut-down relay during this period of time.
