A linear accelerator is designed which gives a large power output and delivers a beam of high-energy particles with variable energy. The accelerator comprises means for projecting a beam of particles along a rectilinear path, a source of r-f wave energy, first accelerating means fed with r-f to accelerate the particles to nearly the velocity of light, means for taking the r-f energy from the first accelerating means and controlling its magnitude without shifting its phase, and a second accelerating means fed with the modified r-f.
