REMOVAL OF CERTAIN FISSION PRODUCT METALS FROM LIQUID BISMUTH COMPOSITIONS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4795415

A method is given for the efficient and economical separation from liquid U-- Bi alloys of fission products, particularly those forming chlorides less stable than UCl3 and thus unaffected by the oxidizing fused salt extraction. The method comprises mixing the liquid alloy with 0.2 to 2.5% Zn at 400 to 500 deg C to form a homogeneous melt, allowing a solid phase containing the Zn and fission products to form, separating the solid phase from the alloy, and distilling the dissolved Zn from the alloy at 550 to 6O0 deg C. The effect of the method on the U content of the alloy is small. (D.L.C.)
