BEAM-FLATTENING FILTERS FOR COBALT-THERAPY UNITS

Journal Article · · Radiology (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4795407

Results with a removable aluminum beam flattener for both normal and wedge field isodose distributions are described. The removable thin aluminum absorbers placed in the central portion of the beam from a Co60 source produced flattened isodose curves, with a more homogeneous distribution and a slightly increased useful beam width. The decrease in output was 9%. Used in conjunction with wedge filters, the absorbers considerably improved the shape and slope of the isodose curves. Filter dimensions are directly applicable to other Model A untts wlth a 2.5 cm diameter source. Although the dimensions of the beamflattening filters would have to be determined, the general method is applicable to all units. (P.C.H.)
