The tandem principle'' allows double use to be made of the high voltage available in particle accelerators. This is effected by injecting a beam of positive ions through a gas channel. An additional electron is picked up by a small percentage of the neutral atoms generated. These negative ions are separated magnetically and injected into a double acceleration tube of which the central electrode carries high positive voltage. An additional gas channel is installed inside the high voltage electrode; the ions passing through lose all electrons and become positive. These ions can therefore be accelerated by the same voltage difference a second time since the negative pole of the high voltage source is connected to both ends of the double tube. With a voltage of 6 Mv, for example, protons of 12 Mev can be obtained. Since the energy spread of particles accelerated in Van de Graaff generators is only plus or minus l kev, the energy stability of the 12-Mev protons is 1: 12,000 or better. (auth)
